No Hot Water? 5 Things to Check Before Calling for Service

Check these five things first – many “no hot water” calls are solved in minutes.

Before you pick up the phone, walk through this list. If any check points to a leak or a gas smell, stop and call us right away at 705-675-0525.

1. Check the power supply

Electric tank: confirm the breaker in your electrical panel has not tripped. Gas tank: make sure the gas valve to the water heater is open.

2. Check the thermostat setting

Someone may have turned it down. For safety and efficiency, around 49°C (120°F) is the recommended setting for most households.

3. Check the pilot light (gas tanks)

If the pilot light is out, follow the relighting instructions on the tank. If it will not stay lit, it is time for a service call.

4. Think about recent hot water demand

Extra laundry, guests, or long showers can drain even a healthy tank. Give it time to recover – if recovery is much slower than it used to be, sediment build-up may be to blame.

5. Look for leaks around the base

Water or rust at the bottom of the tank is not a DIY fix – shut off the water supply to the tank if you can, and call us.
